John Tenniel's illustrations are unique and distinguishable. He geniusly gives the characters emotion and individuality, which are firmly imbedded in my childhood memories as a lover of Alice in Wonderland myself.
His illustrations were preliminary pencil drawings before being engraved into wood that were used to print the actual storybooks. John Tenniel's illustrations remained in black and white for over 40 years until eight selected prints in each book were flooded with colour by hand.
Enjoy and reminisce!
