Emerging Design Talent: Poppy Maxfield

Today I am introducing new and emerging design talent which has become a regular addition to Creative Sketchbook. I was instantly drawn to Poppy Maxfield's quirky and contemporary designs exhibited at New Designers 2012. Poppy has just graduated from Leeds College of Art with a Ba (Hons) in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design.

Poppy takes inspiratio
n from the simplicity of everyday and the beauty of the natural environment that surrounds her. Her aim is to "make what we see everyday interesting and quirky and with a sense of humour and fun," and she certainly achieves this.

I love Poppy's creative approach to typography, she transforms simple lettering in to beautiful illustrations that she floods with washes of fresh candy like colours. "I am often influenced by nostalgia and colourful prints of eras such as the 50's."

Poppy achieves the unique style to her work by drawing initial designs by hand, this hand-crafted and slightly rustic feel is then transformed into fresh, original illustrations. "I take initial ideas from vintage children's books, old dictionary's and bird spotting books, these are my favourite source of interesting illustrations, layouts and colours. "
